New Standards for School Lunches


Championed by First Lady Michelle Obama, the USDA has released new nutrition standards for school lunches. Lunches should now include more whole grains, leafy greens, fruits and vegetables. The new guidelines also set maximum calories per meal and targets that aim to reduce sodium, saturated and trans fats in school lunches. Of course the proof is in the pudding and the question is, will kids eat it? Mealtime comes down to individual plates and palates when the new standards are served up.
Marion Nestle’s blog Food Politics details the history of how the new nutrition standards came to be. There’s been some compromise on what counts as a vegetable; an inexact word, as a result pizza now counts as a vegetable.
Marion suggests our next steps:
·         Set nutrition standards for competitive foods in schools—those sold outside of the lunch program as snacks and meal replacements.
·         Teach kids where food comes from
·         Teach kids to cook

Coming up National Soup Swap Day!



January 21, 2012 is the 6th Annual Soup Swap Day, a tradition started by Knox Gardener. Soup Chick's blog gives a great description of the day’s events. Hold one in your community!

Its pipe freezing cold here in northern California and it’s a good time to have some soup at the ready. My ready favorite this season has been a curried squash variation with carrots, leeks, onions and cauliflower i.e. winter veggies. I bulk it out with homemade chicken broth and coconut milk. It’s a filling and satisfying soup and also accepts leftover proteins as available. I usually make up a big batch and freeze several quarts. Soup swap day had me looking for new recipes and I’m looking forward to trying ParsnipSoup with Leeks and Parsley from Simply Recipes.  Thanks Soup Chick for the recommendation!

On Tuesday January 17th, 2012 at 4pm PST we will host Traditional Naturopath Glen Depke for a webinar entitled “Understand Your Nutritional ID: One Man's Food is Another's Poison.”
In this presentation Glen Depke will be teaching us how to determine which nutritional plan would be best for your specific individuality.  The genetics as well as the functional health challenges we experience play a role in determining our Nutritional ID. Glen will discuss the concepts of biochemical individuality, Metabolic Typing, Nutritional Typing, Nutritional ID and a specific questionnaire that assists in determining which diet and nutrients may be of greatest benefit. He will also touch on fine tuning your meal plan, shifts in Nutritional ID as well as PH per Nutritional ID.
