The Role of Nutrition in Pediatric Cancer Treatment

Hawthorn University graduate Danielle Cook, MS, is the Director of an innovative nutrition program for pediatric oncology patients. She has first-hand experience with pediatric cancer in the United States and the need for sound nutritional support during and after treatment. She will address the unique needs of adolescent and young adult survivors, and how the nutrition program she created bridges patient needs with cancer protocols.

This positive outlook contributes to the holistic healing process after the cancer has been stopped by conventional methods.

Danielle Cook, MS, has been teaching cooking classes and presenting cooking demonstrations of seasonal whole foods for more than 12 years.

After her son was diagnosed with cancer at age 11, Danielle launched herself into better understanding which foods might best help him during treatment and then, as a cancer survivor, for life beyond.

Today she runs "Happily Hungry," a nutrition program for young cancer patients, adolescent cancer survivors, their parents, family and caregivers at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC, in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division. The program combines hands-on cooking demonstrations with consultation, digestive assessments and follow-up for pediatric patients in treatment and off-treatment.

She also gives regular presentations and cooking demonstrations at Inova Fairfax Children's Hospital and at the Life with Cancer Center, in Fairfax, Virginia. Her first book, Happily Hungry: Smart Recipes for Kids with Cancer, was released in September 2012. She has appeared on CNN with Sanjay Gupta, France24 News Network and the Today Show. She obtained her bachelor's degree from Clark University in Worcester, MA and completed her Masters of Science in Holistic Nutrition with the Summa cum Laude distinction at Hawthorn University.  Danielle lives in Washington, DC.

Free Radicals and Antioxidants: Their Role in Cancer

Please join us on Tuesday May 20th, 2014 at 4 PM Pacific / 7 PM Eastern as we host Hawthorn faculty member Kirsten Laverdure, PhD for a webinar entitled "Free Radicals and Antioxidants:  Their Role in Cancer".

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is the number one cause of death worldwide. Traditional treatments of cancer use chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation.  The majority of these treatments rely on the production of free radical species that damage the cell and genetic material pushing the cell to commit suicide.  However, new data is emerging to suggest that, in cancer cells, increases in free radical production can actually help promote tumor progression and lead to drug resistance.

Free radicals, or Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), are scavenger molecules that steal electrons from nearby substances. This process can lead to DNA mutations and alterations of both lipids and proteins within the cell.  Low levels of ROS are required for the cell to live and proliferate; however high levels of ROS initiate a cell death response.  Cancer cells, which are known to have numerous mutations, may have developed a way to use ROS molecules to promote their survival, and actually increase the proliferation process, leading to a worse prognosis.  Given that the majority of current cancer treatments rely on the production of ROS molecules, we may need to re-think our view on both free radicals and antioxidants in the treatment of cancer.

In this webinar we will examine the role of free radicals and antioxidants as they pertain to cancer.  We will discuss the biological role that these molecules play in proliferation and survival.  We will also explore the effect that traditional treatments have on ROS levels and what that may mean for patients.  Finally, we will explore ways that nutrition can help counteract some of these deleterious effects produced by ROS.

Kirsten Laverdure earned her Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Virginia, where she worked on breast cancer and how to make cancer cells more susceptible to standard agents using the body's own pathways.  Her area of expertise is in cancer signal transduction and determining why cancer cells become resistant to treatment.  Currently she is a postdoctoral fellow at the UCLA department of neurology working on brain cancer.  Her research is focused on the role that free radicals play in promoting tumor growth, particularly in response to traditional chemotherapy and radiation.  She is also focused on the role that antioxidants play in preventing cancer cell death and the metabolic changes that a cancer cell undergoes to promote cell growth.  She has lectured extensively and presented her findings in this area at national and international symposia and has authored peer-reviewed articles. She has taught courses in human nutrition and performance, nutritionally based diseases and the global food crisis.  Currently she teaches in the Hawthorn University Doctoral program.

Hawthorn welcomes new faculty member Andrea M. Pryce, N.D.!

We'd like to extend a warm welcome to new faculty member Andrea M. Pryce, ND!
 
Dr. Pryce has a strong background in biomedical research and she maintains a research interest in epigenetics and nutrigenomics particularly as they relate to oncology. Following completion of her ND degree she went into private practice with a goal of helping people build healthy and sustainable lifestyles using naturopathic treatment modalities including the use of bioidentical hormones. She consults with patients of all ages from across the globe.
Dr. Pryce spent her early years in Mountain Village, a very small Yup'ik village on the banks of the Yukon River in Alaska.  She received her baccalaureate degree from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and is a 2006 graduate of Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona. In 2009, she began working at Life Extension in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she was Medical Editor for their monthly magazine.
Dr. Pryce brings significant communication skills, extensive clinical experience, advanced nutrition, environmental medicine and detoxification training to a solid academic background. She currently has two books slated for release in 2014, one on Superfoods and Cancer and one on Environmental Medicine and Detoxification.
