Hawthorn University Welcomes New Faculty

Tara Swartz earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Arizona prior to attending the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, from which she attained her doctorate. Dr. Swartz currently practices medicine in Arizona utilizing dietary & nutritional counseling, the hcG diet, botanical medicine, bio-identical hormone replacement, acupuncture & lifestyle counseling to address women & men’s health.  Currently she focuses her practice on women’s health & weight loss treating such condition as chronic fatigue, thyroid imbalance & GI health.  Dr. Swartz has been teaching nutrition & wellness in the online environment for several years. She is passionate about naturopathic medicine and disease prevention and shares that passion with her students.

The Value of Lab Testing for Holistic Nutrition Professionals

Please join us on Tuesday May 21st, 2013 at 4 pm pacific, 7 pm eastern for a Hawthorn University Webinar with faculty member Melissa Dengler, ND, on the topic of Lab Testing. 

Laboratory tests are procedures that involve testing samples of blood, urine, saliva or other tissues or substances in the body. While a physician utilizes lab tests to diagnose a disease or condition, there is also a non-diagnostic use of testing that can be utilized in the nutrition practice.  As a nutrition consultant, you can teach your clients how to consider their lab test results from a nutritional perspective and to help answer questions such as, "Is my body functioning optimally?” or “What organs or systems need nutritional support?" Laboratory values can help the nutrition professional to tailor their nutritional protocols to the unique individual needs and biochemistry of their clients.  Utilizing lab values in practice can assist the practitioner and client to identify which nutritional goals to prioritize, plan the nutritional protocol, evaluate the response to a healing plan and monitor the progress in reaching those goals. In this webinar, you will learn which laboratory tests can be useful in the nutrition practice and where your clients can order these tests using client-direct lab testing services.

Dr. Melissa Dengler, ND received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 2001. She received her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2005 and then completed a one year residency in family medicine at the Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center in Scottsdale, AZ with a special focus in homeopathy, environmental medicine and clinical nutrition. In addition her other interests include botanical medicine, hydrotherapy, and preventive medicine. While completing her residency in Arizona, Dr. Dengler supervised many student clinical rotations and also served as an adjunct professor of homeopathy and environmental medicine at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. Upon completion of her residency she returned to her home state of Pennsylvania and is now in private practice, is on faculty at Hawthorn University, and teaches holistic nutrition and courses in health and wellness for several institutions. Dr. Dengler is pleased to offer natural health care for the whole family by taking an individualized approach to health and taking quality time to get to know her patients and examine their lifestyles and habits. She is committed to supporting the body's inherent ability to heal using natural therapies to restore health.

Welcome Kirsten Laverdure, Ph.D to the Hawthorn University Faculty!

Kirsten Laverdure earned her Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Virginia, where she worked on breast cancer and how to make cancer cells more susceptible to standard agents using the body’s own pathways. Her area of expertise is in cancer signal transduction and determining why cancer cells become resistance to treatment. Currently she is a postdoctoral fellow at the UC San Diego-Moores Cancer Center working on colorectal cancer. Her research is focused on inflammatory-based cancers, in particular, due to nutritionally-based chronic diseases like IBD and Crohn's Disease. Specifically, her interest is in the role of diet and nutrition in promoting inflammation in the colon to act as a pro-tumorigenic agent. She is also interested in the role that anti-oxidants play in preventing cancer cell death and the metabolic changes that a cancer cell undergoes to promote cell growth. She has lectured extensively and presented her findings in this area at national and international symposia and has authored peer-reviewed articles. She has taught courses in human nutrition and performance, nutritionally based diseases, and the global food crisis.
Dr. L. is currently taking students in the Doctor of Science in Holistic Nutrition program at Hawthorn University.
