Record Keeping for the Nutrition Practice

Please join us on Tuesday May 7th, 2013 at 4pm pacific / 7pm eastern as we host Hawthorn University faculty member Melissa Dengler, ND for a webinar entitled "Record Keeping for the Nutrition Practice."

An individual's health records are among the most sensitive of personal records and great care should be taken to ensure the safe holding of such records. Knowing the appropriate forms to use and how to maintain adequate records provides clinical value in relation to on-going client care. The primary purpose of record keeping is to document the assessments underlying the progress of the client's care and to contribute to the quality of that care. This presentation will outline the importance of record keeping, the types of forms to use in clinical practice and how to keep client charts using the SOAP format.

Dr. Melissa Dengler, ND received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 2001. She received her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2005 and then completed a one year residency in family medicine at the Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center in Scottsdale, AZ with a special focus in homeopathy, environmental medicine and clinical nutrition. In addition her other interests include botanical medicine, hydrotherapy, and preventive medicine. While completing her residency in Arizona, Dr. Dengler supervised many student clinical rotations and also served as an adjunct professor of homeopathy and environmental medicine at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. Upon completion of her residency she returned to her home state of Pennsylvania and is now in private practice, is on faculty at Hawthorn University, and teaches holistic nutrition and courses in health and wellness for several institutions. Dr. Dengler is pleased to offer natural health care for the whole family by taking an individualized approach to health and taking quality time to get to know her patients and examine their lifestyles and habits. She is committed to supporting the body's inherent ability to heal using natural therapies to restore health.

The Complex Equation of Change and Healthy Weight Management

In the United States, over two-thirds of the population is overweight or obese, and exceeding a healthy weight range is a risk factor for many health concerns, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. There is no one cause of obesity, rather it is a complex interaction of genetic, nutritional, metabolic, lifestyle, behavioral, psychological, and physiological factors. Finding ways to support and inspire change and healthy weight is critical to our nation's and humanity's well-being, and may likely form an important part of your future or current practice. We will discuss this challenge, along with the use of analysis to gather information, assess readiness for change, prioritize underlying factors, increase awareness, and further our goal of creating a holistic, tailored approach to weight reduction and management to meet individual clients' needs.

Danielle Hart is a graduate of the Masters of Science in Holistic Nutrition program at Hawthorn University. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Northeastern University. Her career to date has embraced writing, teaching, strategic consulting, solution development, and project management within the digital media, web development, adult learning, and performance improvement industries. She has crafted solutions geared to change the behavior of employees, given innumerable presentations on these solutions, and built a portfolio of digital tools for budgets, timelines, and risk and knowledge management.

Danielle developed an interest in healthy eating and cooking, driven in part by her own multi-year struggle with her health and weight management. These combined factors led her to engage the Masters of Science in Holistic Nutrition program at Hawthorn University. Along the path of her studies, Danielle made a dramatic, positive improvement in her health concerns by changing her own behavior and diet. Over time, for both personal and professional reasons, Danielle developed an increasing interest in the challenging issue, or question, of how people change. The realization that knowledge alone is not enough to effectively create change has led to her focus on uncovering the complex equation of change and healthy weight management. To foster her career and influence in the field, Danielle is now focusing her full-time efforts on behavior change and weight reduction and maintenance. Toward this end, she has founded and is the editor of ENJI Daily (, an online nutrition magazine leveraging the power of social media and the holistic nutrition community, updated every day. ENJI Daily features high-quality articles recommended by industry experts, along with her own writing on topics including diet and weight loss, how to change, exercise and fitness, and eating and cooking for health. She looks forward to a healthy future for all.
